Hao was driving through a roundabout in Brisbane's south when another car entered without giving way and hit him side-on. His car was badly damaged, and in the confusion that followed, he had no idea how the insurance system in Australia worked or what he was supposed to do next.
At the time of the accident, Hao was an international student working casually in hospitality alongside his studies. The crash left him with injuries that needed treatment, a car that needed major repairs, and medical expenses he hadn't planned for — all in a country where he didn't have family nearby to lean on.
Hospitality work is physically demanding, and injuries that limit movement or cause pain have a direct impact on the ability to keep showing up and earning.
