Hao was driving through a roundabout in Brisbane's south when another car entered without giving way and hit him side-on. His car was badly damaged, and in the confusion that followed, he had no idea how the insurance system in Australia worked or what he was supposed to do next. 

At the time of the accident, Hao was an international student working casually in hospitality alongside his studies. The crash left him with injuries that needed treatment, a car that needed major repairs, and medical expenses he hadn't planned for — all in a country where he didn't have family nearby to lean on. 

Hospitality work is physically demanding, and injuries that limit movement or cause pain have a direct impact on the ability to keep showing up and earning. For Hao, the financial pressure of medical bills and car repairs landed on top of an already stretched budget — and unlike most people around him, there was no safety net at home to fall back on. 

For Hao, the hardest part wasn't any single thing — it was everything landing at once. He was trying to recover, keep working, keep studying, and figure out what could be done about an accident that wasn't his fault, all without the support networks that most people around him had. 

Most people navigating an injury have someone to lean on — a family member to help with appointments, a friend who has been through something similar, someone who knows the system. Hao had none of that. Recovery, for him, meant managing everything at the same time and largely on his own.
