Full Story
Kenny was a passenger in his friend's car, on their way to visit another friend. As the car turned near their destination, another vehicle struck them — the impact hitting directly at the rear passenger door where Kenny was sitting.
For a moment, his mind went blank. Then, as he came back to himself, his first thought wasn't about his own pain — it was whether everyone else in the car was alright. The crash had happened quickly, and in that brief, disorienting moment, the details of what had just occurred were hard to piece together.
Once the immediate shock began to settle, a different kind of uncertainty took over. Kenny had heard from a friend that passengers involved in accidents might be able to make a CTP claim — but the situation felt complicated. His friend had been driving. What did that mean for him? Could he still claim? Would doing so cause problems for his friend?
The collision left Kenny with a neck strain — not a dramatic injury on paper, but enough to take him away from work entirely. Kenny works in construction, and the physical demands of the job left no margin. He wanted to go back. He tried to push through. But the pain made it impossible.
The weeks that followed were tough in a way that went beyond the physical. Without income coming in, the pressure built quickly — loan repayments, daily expenses, the ordinary commitments of life that don't pause because you've been in an accident. Kenny found himself anxious and low, dealing with financial stress at the same time as trying to recover from an injury he hadn't asked for.
A friend passed on a contact number for Ascent Lawyers. Kenny called, and his very first question was direct: "If it was my friend's fault, can I still claim CTP?"
The answer was equally direct: yes. As a passenger, his entitlement to make a CTP claim existed regardless of who was responsible for the collision. That one conversation shifted something — not just in terms of understanding his legal position, but in terms of what the next steps could actually look like.
What Kenny hadn't expected was how the process would feel once he was in it. He had assumed lawyers meant formality — a stack of paperwork, a process-heavy experience, lots of back and forth. What he found instead was a team that was straightforward with him. They told him what was needed, when it was needed, and handled the rest. He didn't have to figure out the steps on his own.
Having grown up with an image of lawyers as formal and somewhat distant, Kenny found the experience at Ascent different. The team was warm and genuinely attentive. He felt looked after — not just as someone with a file to manage, but as a person going through a difficult stretch.
For Kenny, that straightforwardness was meaningful. He didn't have to carry the weight of not knowing what came next. And the fact that there was a Chinese-speaking team he could talk to made the whole experience more accessible than he had imagined it would be.
Kenny's matter was resolved. With his claim finalised, he was able to put the stress of that period behind him and look ahead.
His experience left him with something practical, too — a clearer understanding of what passengers in accidents are actually entitled to, and a confidence that the system isn't as inaccessible as it can seem from the outside. He's since recommended Ascent Lawyers to people in his circle, particularly those from the Chinese community who might not know where to turn after an accident.
For anyone in a similar situation — uncertain about whether they can claim, or worried about how it might affect someone else — Kenny's advice is simple: ask the question early. Getting clarity sooner makes everything that follows easier to manage.
