Full Story
Huiqing had been sitting in traffic for around ten minutes on her way home from work — foot on the brake, going nowhere — when a truck struck the back of her car. The impact pushed her several metres forward into the middle of the road, and for a moment she couldn't make sense of what had just happened. All she registered was the force, and then a strange numbness spreading through her lower body.
In the hours after the crash, Huiqing felt shaken but assumed the worst of it would pass. It didn't. By the next day, pain had spread through her neck, back, and left shoulder, and it kept building. She developed a jaw injury that made eating painful and talking difficult. Sleep became almost impossible.

What made it harder was that not everyone believed how much she was struggling. Her previous lawyer questioned whether she was exaggerating. Even her GP seemed uncertain. The insurer denied liability, arguing that her injuries were too serious to have been caused by the collision. For someone already dealing with constant pain and lost independence, being doubted on top of it all was deeply isolating.
Before the accident, Huiqing had worked in an abattoir for close to twenty years — physically demanding work she had done without complaint. Now she couldn't return. She couldn't drive either, and had to rely on family for things she had always managed on her own. The small things she had enjoyed — walking, going shopping, catching up with friends over mahjong — shrank away as her pain took over daily life.
